Who are we?

Overthinking Football is a group publication brought to you by Andrew, Chris, Gordon and Will to write about Fantasy Football (Soccer), specifically in the Fantrax draft format.

All four of us are long-time players of the game, even back when Togga was the go-to platform, and all of us have a shared interest in trying to better understand, explain, and bring new ideas to the game. This Substack—a collaboration between the original three Overthinking Football team members and Gordon—is about continuing to do that, whilst also hopefully being able to entertain and help Fantrax managers compete in their leagues.

There’s a real mix of content and styles here, as you’d expect with having four of us imagining and writing:

Chris and Will were among the first to bring advanced metrics to the Fantrax community, and are the brains who created xFpts and Wins Above Replacement (WAR) for the fantasy draft game. They will continue to innovate to put the best information in the hands of draft managers, so you’ll see plenty of data analysis and insights coming from their work straight to your inboxes and they’re working on apps to continue to enhance your management. If you have a Fantrax stats question, these are your guys.

Andrew, on the other hand, does not have a graduate school education in statistics. But he does have the skills to convey his partners’ data-driven approach to the masses, and has worked with Chris and Will behind the scenes and written for Overthinking Football since the beginning. It’s a cliché that data without interpretation is useless, but Andrew has long been the interpreter and editor of some of the most complex data the draft game has to offer.

Gordon is the newest convert to the crew, having previously written independently at FantasyDraftThoughts. Considerably less data capable than either of Chris and Will, but no less enthusiastic, he aims to blend in the best data with what he’s watching week-to-week. He will jump from deep-dives on specific players and clubs to investigating specific questions that have caught his focus. If you want to learn something, but have fun doing it, Gordon’s writing is tough to beat.

Why subscribe?

We know, we know. We used to do this stuff for free, and now we’ve got paid tiers. We don’t ever intend to take our data behind a paywall. We have a strong core belief that the more people that have access to, use, and develop these metrics, the better and stronger the community will be.

The main reason we now have the paid tiers is to support two things that we would like to bring to you:

  1. We want to be able to write more frequently. We really enjoy doing this, and we like to believe that you get enjoyment from reading what we put out. But writing takes time, often a lot of it. Our new subscriber tiers will simply allow us to bring more to the community.

  2. We want to create more than just data and newsletters. The first version of the ranker app was a small glimpse of what we want to bring to the draft game, but apps take time to produce and money to bring to life. The community has only scratched the surface of what is possible in this arena, and we cannot wait for you to see what else we can create.

So when we say:

“Subscribe to get full access to the newsletter and website. Never miss an update.”

We are incredibly excited by what we think we can bring to you and hope you enjoy it too.
